Under the leadership of Butler Tech Colerain High School Precision Machining Instructor Dave Fox, Business and Industry came together at his Business Advisory Committee meeting. Several of these meetings are held each year to assist with program growth and innovative guidance. This particular meeting placed Butler Tech at the forefront of education by serving as a catalyst for infusing the future needs of business with practical education application that will benefit area employers and the community at large.
State Pre-Apprenticeship Representative Patrick Reardon from the Dept. of Jobs and family Services kicked off the meeting with an overview of the growing implementation of the registered Pre-Apprenticeship programs in Ohio, which Butler Tech is a part of as a registered Pre-Apprenticeship institution.
Montez King, Executive Director for the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS), traveled from Washington, D.C. to share the new NIMS industry skills standards, developed to validate certification skills, with the group. NIMS sets industry skills standards, certifies individual skills against the standards, accredits training programs that meet NIMS quality requirements, and promotes innovative solutions, such as competency-based apprenticeship, to connect credentialed and work-ready individuals with employers.
Representatives from manufacturing companies including Honda, Rhinestahl, Clippard Industries, General Electric Aviation, RB Tools and many others participated in direct discussions with King about the value of the NIMS skills competency based credentials for hiring qualified individuals. The meeting was a direct example of the positive impact education/business partnerships have on our students.
Thanks to Dave Fox and the hard work and generosity of many of the companies who participated, Butler Tech was able to renovate and update the precision facilities and equipment; thus providing our students with a state-of-the-art lab and real-world learning.
